Stavanger's old town wooden houses date back to 17th & 18th Century and were owned by poor fishermen. These houses were brown or orange in color. Since the 1950's these 250 houses are protected, they cannot be changed and were painted white. This has created an exclusive area that comes with a price tag of about $600,000 U.S. for one very small house. Location, Location, Location!
In the past Stavanger was an important town for herring fishing and canning. Unfortunately the herring stopped coming to these waters and canning moved to Poland and China where it was done much cheaper. Today Stavanger's economic wealth is from the petroleum industry and offshore drilling. The picture below was taken in the old cannery, the herring was smoked and ready to eat. Very tasty.
Very interesting.
