July 16, Copenhagen

Finally back in the world of blogging, ship had internet problems.
Kobenhavn means the merchants harbor. Today it's referred to as the most European of the Scandinavian countries. Copenhangen is the home of Carlsberg beer, Maersk shipping and Noma restaurant (3rd top restaurant in the world). Copenhagen is a fabulous city, very cosmopolitan and historic.

A trip to Copenhagen wouldn't be complete without a visit and picture of Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid.

A typical sign on many tour buses, guess we are "turistfarts". Yes it is prounced as it's spelled.

Queen Margaret II, was not in residence, Amalienborg Palace, but I was at her residence!

This 12th Century fortress, Christiansborgh Palace, had hidden waterways in the courtyard allowing the Vikings to hide ships from the enemy and protect the King. These waterways were throughout Copenhagen but over the centuries as the city grew the waterways were covered with concrete. Today this is the site for government buildings, the Parliament, Supreme Court, prime minister's office, royal reception rooms, royal library, museums an royal stables.

Typical of the Scandanavian countries the new building architecture is very modern. This is Copenhagen's opera house.

The locals bike everywhere. This is an expensive bike designed for one biker, 2 children, groceries and a case of beer. There are many variations of this bicycle. Sustainability is very important to governments and individuals. Denmark 's goal is to use 50% of wind power, presently they are at 35%-40%.  It is ironic that they embrace a sustainable and healthy lifestyle but there are many smokers, especially women.

A view of Copenhagen from the canals complete with Jazz band, these guys were amazing.
