June 16, Arrival in Porto

Porto is a beautiful town. The temperature has dropped and it's cool again, but we are in the north. Porto means "the port" and it has been the center of trade since the days of Ancient Rome. A Roman fort here took advantage of the strategic position at the mouth of the Douro River, and settlements were founded on facing sides of the river. Douro means gold.
